They make plastic outlet shims for this that cover the gap also providing some arc protection between the outlet box n wall material even in multiple hang box, use these or at very least non metallic rated ones. Also their not that expensive for what they do. ✅

NO! Even if it takes a day..Make sure the power is off at the out let (circuit breaker)Find the stud locations, carefully cut the drywall large enough for a real repair. (If a two wire setup, at least use a GFCI). Make sure you have good wire length. Attach a new box, feeding the wire through the box. Fit in the drywall and repair it. Make sure the wiring is connected and grounded. Count on painting or drywalling. A lot more work yeah, but better safe. Look at some good Youtube videos.
