I hope more Chinese Singaporeans will pick up the Malay language. We live in the Malay Peninsula, and Malay is also our national language. Learning it is more than just gaining another language — it is a way of understanding the history, culture and people around us. When we make the effort to speak another community’s language, even imperfectly, we show respect. Language can break barriers, build trust and remind us that Singapore’s strength has always come from different communities learning to understand one another. Sometimes, a few simple words spoken with sincerity can bring people closer than a thousand words spoken from a distance.
