Government used to have an income from water, electricity, gas, oil, rail. Until Thatcher🤮 sold it off cheaply. Some people will say ‘it was to raise capital’ but it was her political ideology pure and simple… “the free market, competition makes things cheaper for people” except, of course, the monopolies she sold off.
