My mom was a professional cake baker and decorator for over 45 years.. she always did a crumb coat on wedding cakes . She always used an offset spatula on the top and sides. She never used a scraper. She had beautiful sides doing it with a spatula.

Can you show how to do this on a square cake? I made my cousins birthday cake and found it hard to get the icing to be smooth. I also don't have a spinning cake board and lazy susan

sorry,did my son's and wife's on Sat, Sept 19,(my 1st wedding cake)so half way crumb coated! I'm 72,told a few times that I don't look it😅,it was good,but is harder than it looks..3 tiers and platic container w/ flowers in between!😏Had severe back pain (problems w/ 3 discs, I'm pretty sure) icing not quite thick enough..gr son made a tip from a plastic bag cause I reached to get mac n cheese pies(made 1 huge and 2 medium for venue, and 1 for home)& saw the tips,but forgot to pack up to finish borders at venue! didn't get to refrigerate,but layers had been frozen,then thawed in fridge.and approx 30 min drive..so " timing",too! later the groom ran away,(slld off🫣)but,got a lot of good compliments on the cake! and yes,still in pain, barely walked w/ cane..waiting on decision from Dr..to see her or straight to pain clinic for injections into spine..I'll welcome them!!😁
