Amber Alyssa Tuccaro was 20 years old when she disappeared near Nisku, Alberta, on August 18, 2010. Amber, a member of the Mikisew Cree First Nation, had travelled from Fort McMurray to the Edmonton area with her infant son and a female friend for a short vacation. Amber’s mother had been texting with her after she arrived. Then, that night, the messages stopped. When Amber’s mother contacted the friend who had travelled with her, the woman gave changing accounts of where Amber had gone. The family quickly became concerned. At approximately 8:00 p.m. on August 18, Amber accepted a ride from an unknown man while attempting to travel into Edmonton. During the ride, Amber received a phone call. The conversation was recorded, capturing both Amber and the man driving the vehicle. The driver can be heard telling Amber they were travelling east toward Edmonton, but investigators later stated they believe the vehicle was actually travelling south into rural Leduc County. Amber can be heard questioning where the man is taking her. She was never seen alive again. Amber’s family attempted to report her missing, but his mother was told she had to wait 24 hours. Police suggested that Amber was young and may simply have been out partying. Amber was eventually added to the missing-person list, but was later removed after an unconfirmed sighting. Amber’s mother was not informed and discovered the removal herself while searching for Amber online. The sighting was not Amber, and her family then had to work to have her listed as missing again. Investigators later recovered a recording of Amber’s final known phone call. The family was told police had possessed the recording for about a year before they were brought in to hear it. Only a short portion was later released publicly in hopes that someone would recognize the driver’s voice. Belongings recovered from Amber’s motel room were later destroyed after being taken into police possession. It is unknown what potential evidence may have been lost. On September 1, 2012, Amber’s remains were discovered in rural Leduc County. Her death was ruled a homicide. Amber’s brother testified in 2017 during the National Inquiry into MMIWG that Amber had been identified through dental records after her remains were found, but that the family had requested confirmatory DNA testing and, at that time, it had not been conducted. The family’s uncertainty became serious enough that they discussed arranging their own DNA testing and even considered exhuming Amber’s remains. No one has ever been charged in the death of Amber Tuccaro. Amber’s family has continued to fight for answers, accountability, and justice; not only for Amber, but for other families of missing and murdered Indigenous people. The identity of the man heard speaking with Amber during her final known phone call remains unknown. If you recognize his voice, remember something from the Nisku or Leduc County area in August 2010, or have any information regarding Amber Alyssa Tuccaro’s homicide, please contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). #Alberta #YEG #Canada #Unsolved #Leduc
