@tracy_tysonmd: Is your toddler a biter? 😬 First: biting is a very normal toddler behavior. It doesn’t mean your child is “bad,” and it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong as a parent. Toddlers may bite because they’re seeking oral stimulation, frustrated, overwhelmed, or simply don’t have the language yet to communicate what they need. The goal isn’t punishment, it’s figuring out why the biting is happening and intervening early. 🦷 Oral/sensory need? Give them something appropriate to bite instead. 😤 Frustration? Calmly remove them and give them the words: “You’re mad they took your truck. We don’t bite. Tell me/help please.” 👶 Very young toddler? Keep your reaction brief, create some space, and move on. 🏫 Biting at daycare? Work with the caregivers to identify patterns: certain toys, children, transitions, hunger, fatigue, or other triggers. And you generally don’t need a long conversation at home about something that happened hours earlier at daycare. Toddlers learn best in the moment. What usually doesn’t help? Biting them back, shaming, or lengthy punishment. If biting is frequent, severe, suddenly new, causing significant injuries, or isn’t improving despite consistent strategies, talk with your pediatrician. Have you survived the biting stage?
