Sentence C largely tells the reader something already established earlier in the paragraph. Sentence D, however, develops the discussion further: the reader learns something more. A useful check when reviewing your own argumentative writing: Does this sentence develop my idea, or merely repeat something the reader already knows? Longer does not necessarily mean better.
