I think one of the most peaceful things that happens as you get older is slowly losing the need for strangers to think your life is going well. You stop needing everyone to know where you went. What you bought. What your wife did for you. How much money you’re making. How happy your family is. Because eventually you realise that being happy and looking happy are two completely different things. And social media has made us incredibly good at the second one. Someone can argue with their spouse and post a picture together an hour later. Be struggling financially and still make their lifestyle look incredible. Feel completely lonely and somehow convince thousands of people that they’re living their best life. You’re seeing moments. Angles. Captions. Carefully selected parts of somebody’s reality. Not their life. And yet we compare our entire existence to it. There are people with incredibly beautiful lives who barely post anything. They’re too busy actually living it. Enjoying their marriage. Spending time with their children. Sitting with their parents. Enjoying what Allah has given them without needing an audience to validate it. There’s nothing wrong with sharing parts of your life. But when you constantly need other people to see that you’re happy, it’s worth asking yourself why. Some of the happiest moments of your life will have no pictures. No stories. No likes. Nobody else will even know they happened. And maybe that’s what makes them so special. - @thesunnahguy
