If we properly paid people for their wages in jail/prison, some of those people would have a lower recidivism rate because they would have some financial help to hold them over to jobs/housing/whatever on the outside. I had that thought in middle school, and my teacher stared dumbfounded at me. He was impressed anyone could make such a connection, but I've had family and friends go in and seem to come back out worse mentally, physically, and financially.

California voted against banning prison slavery in 24... WE HAD THE CHANCE TO BAN IT AT LEAST IN CALI AND IT FAILED. When I realized the DOD buys slave made items I looked at my clothes. I have mostly Pinebelt/ American Apparel Uniforms, But Unicor/ American Prison System Is whats on alot of uniform tags. I got our shop together to look at the tag when the slavery vote was going on. I hate that this exists and the fact it failed In Cali tells me its not going anywhere for a long time

When I was in Lansing, Kansas state penitentiary, we made 0.38c/day working on the compound. Certain inmates could get jobs outside the campus making up to $12/hr but had to pay rent if they were accepted/hired on (the state receives federal money per inmate to keep them alive, about $137/day in KS.) They work 10-12hr days, including transport, re-admission procedures. It’s absolutely slavery and it’s absolutely still very alive in the US. -Circa 2018 (incarcerated for 56g of Cannabis, 3year sentence, every day served, 3months of “good time”, day for day.)
