I didn’t always hate elevators. But after what happened at the mall that night, I refuse to get inside one. My friend Maya and I had spent hours shopping, eating fries, and taking stupid pictures in the mirrors. By the time we decided to leave, it was 9:47 PM. The mall was almost empty. We walked toward the elevator. DING. The doors opened. We stepped inside. I pressed G. Nothing happened. I pressed it again. Still nothing. Then the elevator started moving. 4. I stared at the number. “Wait…” Maya looked up. “What?” “There isn’t a fourth floor.” The elevator stopped. DING. The doors opened. There was a hallway outside. But it wasn’t part of the mall. No stores. No signs. No music. Just a long, dark corridor with dozens of closed doors. Maya grabbed my arm. “Don’t get out.” The elevator doors started closing. Then— BANG! Something slammed against the other side. We both screamed. The doors opened again. Nothing was there. I started frantically pressing G. The elevator wouldn’t move. Then a little girl’s voice came from the hallway. “Lina…” I froze. Maya looked at me. “Did you hear that?” The voice came again. “Lina…” It sounded exactly like me. I whispered, “That wasn’t me.” The lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then everything went black. I felt someone whisper directly beside my ear. “You shouldn’t have come back.” The lights came back on. Maya was gone. “Maya?” Nothing. I screamed her name. Still nothing. Then I heard her voice from the end of the hallway. “Lina…” I stepped out of the elevator. “Maya?” A door slowly opened. CREEEAK. Inside was a tiny room. There was one chair. Maya was sitting in it with her back toward me. “Maya?” She didn’t answer. I stepped closer. “Maya, please.” She slowly turned around. She smiled. “Hi, Lina.” I almost cried from relief. “Oh my gosh!” I moved toward her. Then Maya’s smile disappeared. “Don’t come closer.” I stopped. “Why?” She pointed behind me. Her face went pale. “Because…” “…that’s not me.” I slowly turned around. Another Maya was standing in the doorway. Same clothes. Same hair. Same face. She was smiling. Then another one stepped out behind her. Then another. Then another. Within seconds, the hallway was filled with them. Dozens of Mayas. Every single one was smiling. Except the real Maya. She grabbed my hand. “RUN!” We sprinted toward the elevator. Behind us came dozens of footsteps. THUD. THUD. THUD. THUD. I saw the elevator. “THERE!” We jumped inside. I smashed the G button. The doors started closing. One of the Mayas reached through the gap. Her fingers almost touched my face. Then— DING. The doors shut. The elevator started going down. 4. 3. 2. 1. G. The doors opened. We were back in the normal mall. People were walking around. Music was playing. Stores were open. Everything looked completely normal. I checked my phone. My blood went cold. 9:47 PM. “It’s still 9:47…” Maya stared at me. Then we heard— DING. The elevator behind us opened. A little girl was standing inside. She was holding my phone. I immediately checked my pocket. It was empty. The girl smiled. Then she whispered, “You forgot me upstairs.” The elevator doors closed. I looked down. I was holding Maya’s hand. Except Maya was standing several feet away from me. I slowly looked at the hand I was holding. It wasn’t Maya’s. It was the little girl’s. She squeezed my hand. Then whispered, “Now you’re staying.” Every light in the mall went out. When they came back on, my phone finally changed. 11:11 PM. The mall was completely silent. Except for one sound coming from the elevator. DING. Then again. DING. Then again. Like someone was coming down from the fourth floor. Except there was still one problem. There was no fourth floor. #scary #scarystories #creepystorytime #captionstory #horrortok @halaelshahawy
