Today, I came the immigration courtrooms at 26 Federal Plaza to a press conference with Gov Hochul and @Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani on the state of children having to navigate this system alone. New York stepping up with $7.25 million in legal aid after the Trump administration let a $356 million federal contract with legal aid providers like @acaciajustice expire on July 31. The fallout is immediate — over 25,000 unaccompanied migrant children now at risk of facing deportation proceedings with no lawyer beside them. More than 1,300 of them are right here in New York. There have already been more deportation hearings for these kids this year than in all of 2025— which is astounding. This is addresses a fraction of the problem, but I’m so glad to see the state and city stepping in where the federal government walked away. I hope there is more to come.
