You may have heard that adding more muscle will increase your metabolism. And this is true. But if we look at the strict calorie burn from muscle tissue itself, one pound of muscle only burns about 6-10 calories/day. So if you're adding 5lb of muscle (which is a good amount!), you may only burn an extra 50 calories/day. Which isn't NOTHING, but it's not as significant as commonly claimed. However, this may not be the whole picture of how muscle affects your metabolism. Metabolism is complex, and muscle clearly affects metabolic processes in more ways than the strict calorie burn from the tissue itself. Muscle improves glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity. These adaptations may affect your body's efficiency at using fat as fuel, improve energy levels, and help keep hunger cravings more stable. Taken together, these benefits can compound to create habits and behaviors that ultimately lead to improved energy expenditure and positive body composition changes. More research is necessary to truly understand the impact of muscle on metabolism, but we know it has a very positive effect. In today's episode, I break down how our metabolism works, how it changes as we age, and how muscle really affects metabolism. Listen to episode #200 of The Dr. Shannon Show on any podcast platform.
