@thejournal_ie: Citizenship ceremonies have been taking place this week, as people who have waited years to become Irish citizens took their pledges. The ceremonies come against the backdrop of plans to change the application requirements – including extending the residency requirement from five years to eight and introducing a language proficiency test. For those we spoke to, the overriding feeling was one of joy and elation as their journey to citizenship finally came to an end. But many of the new citizens we spoke to also expressed sympathy for those who will now face stricter rules and potentially three more years of waiting than they had expected. I think requiring people to give up their original citizenship to get an Irish passport would show real commitment. If someone truly loves Ireland and wants to be Irish, revoking their home citizenship shouldn't be an issue. Plus, it stops people from fleeing back to countries that refuse to extradite after a violent crime.

Notice how none of those at the ceremony think the Irish flag is racist. Pay attention 😉
