Respect sets the floor for how you treat people, but trust determines how close you let them get. When you decide upfront to never trust an entire group, you build walls instead of healthy boundaries. Boundaries allow you to evaluate a person slowly over time while keeping yourself safe; walls keep everyone out, including the genuinely good people who would have earned your faith. Instead of writing off trust entirely, try shifting from blind trust to earned trust. Trust shouldn't be given away freely on day one, nor should it be permanently locked away. It is built incrementally through consistent actions, character, and how someone handles your smaller boundaries over time. When you judge people strictly as individuals rather than through a collective rule, you protect your peace without sabotaging your chance at deep friendships or meaningful relationships. It is also worth looking closely at where that rule came from. Carrying the baggage of past betrayals into new interactions means you end up punishing new people for old stories they didn't write. Holding onto respect is a strong foundation, but giving trustworthy individuals the space to prove themselves—one small step at a time—is how you guard your heart without closing it off completely.
