It’s one of the worst kinds of pain. For me, one of the deepest wounds was having a father who seemed to love himself more than he loved me, and ultimately chose to leave. But another kind of pain that can completely rip your heart apart is betrayal from the person you thought was the love of your life. Hearing someone tell you how much they love you while, behind your back, they’re betraying that love. Then finding out and realizing the relationship you thought was safe and real wasn’t what you believed it was. That happened to me in one of the worst ways possible. I’m remarried now, but wounds like that don’t always disappear just because life moves forward. Sometimes the hardest part is the fear and skepticism that follows you. You find yourself wondering, “Is this love real? Am I safe here? Is there something coming that I don’t know about?” People need to understand how deeply their choices can affect someone. Betrayal doesn’t always hurt for a month or a year. Sometimes it changes the way a person experiences trust, love, and relationships for the rest of their life. The person who betrays someone may eventually move on because they never had to experience the betrayal from the other side. But the person who was betrayed can carry that wound into every rel
