@antifascistdad: All leftists should study Carney very carefully. His politics are easy to understand. More complex is his skill at affect, at ennobling patriarchal capitalism, at offering the illusion of secure attachment. Anybody who thinks they can bypass the Frankfurt School in sussing Carney out and how to respond to him is playing with half a deck. #Carney, #FrankfurtSchool, #Hegemony, #Gramsci, #AntifascistDad
I do believe his inhuman focus on finance will come back to bite him. He’s unemotional and devoid of empathy.

Comrade Broseph ☭🇦🇺🇵🇸 :
That speech at Davos in January will go down as one of the most important of the decade, not for what is said, but for what it didn't and what it insinuated between the lines and what it concreted for the middle power futures.

Part of it is that we always compare everything in Canada to the USA. So our healthcare is bad but at least it’s better than the USA, our maternity leave sucks but at least it’s better than the USA. So if we compare Carney and Trump, of course we’re going to breath a sigh a of relief!

i think it’s because he very, very sincerely believes he is a force for good. i think he drinks his own kool-aid whereas most other similar right wing figures are just crooks. i don’t think carney is a crook, i think he’s a pious man of the religion of so-called ethical capitalism.

There is a critical difference in all of the players you referenced. Most talked about big game but effected no change - maybe they wanted to, maybe they didn’t. In the case of the US their broken political system meant even if they wanted to they couldn’t. I think Carney & Canada is different. Canada has long been an underperforming and subjected / subservient nation (in many ways willingly so). The effort he is making to change that is clear and given politics south of us mandatory. I respect his effort, and yes in every decision there are winners and losers and yes you could always find the flaw, but a politician that is words AND deeds. Rare, very rare indeed. So yes is our current capitalist system flawed - yep. Would an improvement in our economy improve all of our social systems yes. Could we transfer to another demonstrably success political system (name one). Could we do that without mass disruption - practically no. So while you are arguing against his efforts - what benefit does it do? I’m actually very curious. Canada does have social supports and a functioning democracy. Would these not be strengthened and protected by working together with like minded countries?

This is the best description of Mark Carney I have seen. His skill with all you have described makes him extraordinarily dangerous.

Yup. We voted him in because he was who we needed but we also knew he was no Lib. Churchill was a jerk but he was needed to get the UK through the war.

That's not what Smith said. It's not that free market can't exist without morals; what he believes is that a HEALTHY free market can't exist without morals, i. e., it can't function properly without it. That means that, in his view, even if the market is free, without morals and fairness, the so-called "invisible hand" won't produce the common good. That's funny because neoliberals believe that only an unregulated and unrestricted market can lead to the common good, but Smith belives the opposite: a market that's not restricted by rules (at least moral rules) is doomed. In this sense, Keynes is much closer to Smith than any Austrian or Chicago boy.

He's a capitalist in the Adam Smith sense of capitalist. There is no free market without morals, said Adam Smith. That's a world away from the crony capitalism - the oligarchy - we're suffering under now.

like u said. has it always been that way from both sides. blair. obama. bush. clinton. and now carney. and we are so aware of it now because we are now further into the late state capitalism and it’s true nature of inhumaness?
