Come on. Former meat processor here. If everybody switched to vegan leather, meat processors would find a way to eat cow leather. There would be a brand new product on the market. Super chewy jerky.

Grew up in horse racing. Real leather does in fact last damn near forever. Pops had saddles that were older than me. His boots lasted about 2-4 years, some pairs better than others.

im no expert on the meat industry, but I know too much about fast and sustainable fashion, and his one mistake in his video is he said it was more "ethical". thats not...really the correct word to use for the argument. leather is 100% more environmentally sustainable than faux leather, ethics don't really play into the specific argument he's trying to make really (heavy on the nuance here). also, leather will outlast cotton every time in instances where both are cared for properly. tho, you're on the right track that a good linen could go toe to toe with a poor quality leather. but, in the end, the argument is rather moot considering most people wear polyester clothes. so the argument of genuine vs faux leather just ends up being a wealth flex. is real leather better than faux leather? yes. is it accessible? no.

He's right about the longevity of well processed leather versus cotton. That's proven through our museums and their collections based on findings found in archaeological sites. Plant fibers just do not last as long nor do they take the abuse that leather can take and with good care, bounce back from. My assumption is that his audience includes Peta members who believe sheep sheering is cruel and that shepherds intentionally harm their animals yearly to gather wool. will being, in my opinion, the second most sustainable and long-lived clothing material.

I feel like a lot of people, especially in this comment section are missing. the point that original Creator is making that vegan and faux leather is not better for the environment than real leather is. and that by purchasing four vegan leather, you're not doing anything to help the slaughtering of cows

I’m currently wearing a belt I paid an independent leather worker $100 for 15 years ago. And I’ll probably wear it till I die. Definitely longer than a 100 of those crappy plastic belts people wear.

We were just discussing how Rolls Royce uses calf leather (which they own a ranch to raise themselves) in their seat making, and they are so particular on the uniformity of the patterning, that they destroy any pelts with stretchhmarks.

He lost me at the beginning. If someone is switching to “vegan” leather because of ethics, they also aren’t eating meat. So if everyone switched, we’d all be vegetarian or vegan, and the only cows being slaughtered would be to feed our pets.
