I don’t get why people won’t just admit they want a tv room not a living room. And maybe part of why people don’t entertain as much in the US is because we all focus everything around the tv. And that’s why everyone ends up in the kitchen because it doesn’t feel so isolating. Just a thought.

I compromised - my TV in my office is on a rolling table tucked in a corner, because sometimes I like to watch movies there at night. But no WAY am I putting it on my sideboard when this is my view.

I can say in my entire adult life, I've never gone to someone's house or had someone to mine and had the TV involved. we're playing games, having food, just having conversation. and I'm someone who has until recently consumed A LOT of TV, I just always did it on my own time.

I'm currently sitting in an arm chair that is next to my TV. You absolutely can't watch the TV from this chair. However, it does give a lovely view of my backyard and is a great spot to sit with a coffee or to read a book. Not everything has to revolve around the television.

We hardly ever watch the tv. Maybe like an hour or two a week? TBH we all end up just watching our phones individually when we're ready for bed and laying down. We're an active family of 5 and seems like we get enough screen time just from our phones throughout the day.

When I was in my early 20's we'd go to a friend's house to watch movies etc, but none of us were worried about the design of the room - more "who gets the cleaner armchair" & "what's that weird stain on the sofa?". Now those same friends come over for cocktails & gossip!!

The TV is the focal point of our living room, but that’s because anime and movie nights are our standard. That’s also usually how we entertain. Our sofa is L-shaped and very deep though, one of those you cuddle up in, so it’s great for ”regular” hosting as well. We easily fit 6-7 people in it. We also have a large cozy, vintage armchair (it used to be in my mums childhood home) next to the TV. You can’t see the TV from it, but it’s there for when we host for drinks and talking. Same with an ottoman that can be used as a footrest or double as a padded stool (which my hubby often uses when we have guests over for drinks, so he can lip read everyone because he has impaired hearing). It’s a room that serves several purposes and we’ve designed the interior to fit our lives, as one should.

Hi Alexander. I have a TV but rarely use it... I appreciate this video because it gives me permission to not have my furniture all facing towards it. The main use of my sofa is as my cat's favourite place to sleep. If I'm sitting on it, I'm scrolling this app with my cat on my lap. I'll be thinking about how to arrange my furniture to welcome people into my apartment to chat and drink coffee, not optimise for watching the TV.

A TV will NEVER be the focal point of a room. UNLESS the room's purpose is to watch TV, and even then, I have it on a swivel arm wall mount. It is still in the corner, and it extends out when we watch a movie.
