generally esophagitis itself isn’t something that kills you, and most cases are treatable. But chronic, untreated acid-reflux esophagitis can damage the esophagus over many years. In some people, that can lead to Barrett’s esophagus, which increases the risk of esophageal cancer. Even then, most people with Barrett’s do not develop cancer.

He likely had untreated esophagitis / or it was unknown for a long time - or poorly treated. With advancements & her health & lifestyle likely won’t result in the same cancer as her dad died from. But he did start with esophagitis.
