As children, their emotional needs weren't met, so they learned to rely on themselves. Depending on someone else doesn't feel safe - it feels risky, even shameful. As adults, they operate by one rule: "I'm safest when my life stays under my control." Anything that requires changing that control feels like a loss of safety. Building a life together requires mutual dependence - and that can feel threatening to an avoidant. It requires adjusting routines, compromising, considering another person's needs, making decisions as a team. For an avoidant, this doesn't feel romantic or bonding. It feels like pressure, obligation, a loss of independence, emotional exposure. This is why you feel unseen. You want to build a future together. You want someone who takes your needs into consideration. You want someone who chooses you and stays when things get hard. And an avoidant doesn't give you that.
