Lalla Fatma N'soumer: Leader of the Kabyle resistance. > Lalla Fatma N’Soumer (c. 1830–1863) was a Kabyle anti-colonial leader who became one of the most prominent figures of resistance to the French conquest of Algeria. Born in the Djurdjura region, she came from a respected religious family and received an education through her father’s madrasa. Her religious knowledge, social influence, and leadership brought her into the resistance during the 1840s and 1850s. In the 1850s, she emerged as a leader alongside her brother and worked with other resistance figures, including Sherif Boubaghla. She participated in several battles against French forces, including the Battle of the Sebaou River in 1854 and the Battle of Tachekkirt, where Kabyle forces defeated a French expedition. Her resistance contributed to maintaining the independence of several Kabyle communities and made her a prominent figure in the struggle against French expansion into Kabylia. In 1857, a large French expedition under Marshal Randon and General MacMahon renewed the campaign to subdue Kabylia. After further fighting, including the Battle of Chellata Pass, Lalla Fatma N’Soumer was captured on 11 July 1857. She was imprisoned and later placed under house arrest at Tablat, where she died in 1863, aged about 33.
