@coachdango: Researchers at Tufts took ten frail 90-year-olds, some in wheelchairs, and put them on a real strength training program three days a week. Eight weeks later, leg strength was up 174%. Walking speed improved 50%. Two people ditched their canes completely. It's proof your body can still grow and adapt no matter your age. It's never too late to start, and it's never too late to get stronger than you were yesterday. - Dan #CoachDanGo #Fitness #health
I'd rather be the oldest person in the gym than the youngest person in the retirement home.

I added a 30 pound weight vest to my hikes. When I bought it, I had no idea what “ 30 pounds” meant but I found out when it showed up: 30 pounds is a lot! it was probably too much, but I’m stubborn and cheap, and just getting it on was a bit of a workout! Eventually, I was able to walk to the end of my street and back, then I’d add a little bit each day. Now I can do a 4-5 mile hike with a 500 foot increase in elevation, and I almost forget it’s even on! And no aches, no pains no nothing. Oh, by the way, I’m in my 70s.

Facts! I’m 40 & I was bodybuilding then I found out I have an AVM and aneurysm in my brain. I was getting lightheaded & dizzy in the gym, then I started to get tinnitus & really bad headaches so I went to ent got an MRI and found both of those little guys. Long story short I stopped going to the gym the past five months and my body has completely changed. I feel weak and frail. Can’t wait to get back in the gym.

Your last line you said backwards. You said, "I'd rather be the youngest person in the weight room, than the oldest person in the nursing home." But I'm pretty sure you meant to say, "I'd rather be the oldest person in the weight room, than the youngest person in the nursing home." Right?

My stepmom has severe COPD and is on oxygen. I wonder if there’s any way she can safely try strength training. Is there any information on that specific situation?

My dad is 81 has started strength training 3 days a week with a personal trainer, he’s pushing 190kgs with his legs and deadlifting 100kgs, he’s building back his muscle and definition and it’s been so good for his confidence and mind.

My coach taught me you can build muscle till the day you die. Muscle has no expiration date or life expectancy unlike your joints and that is why it’s important to build muscle because they protect the joint

As a physical therapist, I can tell you that this is absolutely accurate. You can still build muscle at 100 years old.

my 90 years old grandma broke her hip in three places back in december, she took LESS THAN A MONTH to heal. according to doctors and physiotherapists it was because she went on (long) walks daily, that wasn't even strength training, just walking. her husband, my grandad, before getting ALS, went to the gym 3 times per week strength training ever since he was 60, he had young people complimenting his physique (he was in his 80s!) which always made him proud, he was able to hike and go look for mushrooms until he got sick

PTA here. I teach my older folks all the time that muscles are actually pretty dumb. They only know tension. You can’t tell the difference between an “old” muscle vs a “young” muscle. Same thing with male and female muscles on observation alone. The human body is amazing.

58, train 5 days per week and fairly fit. I outstrip 80% of people I know that are half my age and constantly get told to “slow down” whenI walk at my natural pace. There are no negatives to regular exercise.
