The Kipchaks were a Turkic nomadic people who spread from Central Asia across the steppes into Europe (the “Kipchak Steppe”) between the 11th and 13th centuries. They never formed a single state, living instead as a confederation of tribes. They fought and allied with Kievan Rus’, the Byzantine Empire, and Hungary. Mongol invasions in the 13th century broke their power—some were absorbed into the Golden Horde, while others were sold into the Islamic world as slaves, where they formed the backbone of the Mamluk armies (notably the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt). Their language is the ancestor of today’s Kipchak-branch Turkic languages, including Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tatar, and Bashkir.
