What we were taught in economics...
Was from a far right love.

If “the economy” requires that some (if not most) people must have no power, no wealth, and no stability…it’s a bad system and we should stop doing it. I know it’s simplistic, but seriously. The economy is man-made. It’s not real. We don’t need to destroy the planet and our humanity at its whims. It has no whims! It’s just the make believe game we agreed on centuries ago, and the game is dumb, honestly.

the field of economics is so funny to me. we treat it as if it's some fundamental law of life like physics are for example. except we literally made all of it up

“this is going to be sloppy” - proceeds to deliver a perfectly articulated political economy lecture

This is why I joined the NDP to vote for Avi. I had Shannon Devine on my podcast and the need and desire to have better politicians that serve working people is deeply desired in Canada. I’m really interested right now in the Left socialist response in the EU parliament to this association agreement. Good stuff brother.

Investors expect a return on their money. Allowing investment into our public services is inevitably going to enshittify the investors to extract those profits.

Perfectly stated, I wish my postmedia-brained coworkers would hear this! It is an obviously bad idea to sell off a monopoly like power, water, airports etc, because of course a private company will increase the price of these essential services as high as the public will bear. Better for the implicit profit (difference between public price and private price for services) to flow unseen to the public who benefit from the services delivered at-cost.

How can you talk about 70s economics and not mention productivity once. One of the biggest problems of the 70s was stagnation in productivity (without a requisite stagnation in inflation). And one of the biggest causes behind the end of this economic downturn was yes, deregulation, but more importantly computerization, the transition to a service economy, and the requisite productivity gains that come along with it. (This is btw, essentially the reason the USSR started to slowly collapse after the 1970s, it completely failed to transition to a service economy and was a laggard with computerization, two failures which meant the government could not delivery real wage gains to its citizens. You can not magically create higher wages out of a given economic activity without gains in productivity. In the US labour unions tried to squeeze more money out of economic activities that did not create enough revenue to support higher wages without any changes to production (in the case of cars: automation), so of course it all came tumbling down.

I've got what is perhaps a hot take, perhaps uneducated; I believe there should be crown corporations in the oil/gas, air travel, rail, shipping, mining, forestry, energy (green), and grocery sectors at the very least. I also believe that if a corporation uses public funding and public resources, then it should be, at least in part, owned by the public

I think that carney is good for capital and it will keep Canada from beating the brunt of the worst of the upcoming global financial crisis, but it will be violently detrimental to the citizens of the country.

The problem with nationalization is the capitalist don’t get to control it. Wait …

Capitalism needs new markets to feed the beast, the last is public infrastructure. Toll lanes were the first openly to go private. Prisons, I suspect quietly water utilities are moving to a for profit model. Soon insurance will probably cover a fire department for a subscription based fee. FFKS
