I am a 1099 independent contractor and work with two companies. The first company I work with I let know on Thursday, October 23rd of last year that my brother was about to pass away. He was on life-support, so we knew that there was a strong possibility he would pass once they removed the life-support. I made sure any work that I had was completed and did not need any coverage at all so that I could take off Friday the 24th. When I returned on Monday and signed in (I work remotely), I received an email telling me that I had to take on someone else’s work for the week. No asking how I’m doing or whether or not I could handle the extra work. My brother had in fact passed on Thursday night, and I wrote them an email to let them know. I had no idea if there was even going to be a service for my brother as he passed away so traumatically. For the first time, I told this company no. I said told them my brother had just passed and I don’t even know if there was a funeral yet, but you want to give me someone else’s work? The reply was “I understand“. No apology and no condolences. They never sent me anything. I will never extend myself for this company again or any other.
