It ends with the kneecap centered and the knee supported. The visible deformity can resolve immediately, but pain, swelling, and injured soft tissues may still need weeks or months to recover. Some kneecaps return to place on their own. Either way, the knee needs medical assessment for associated injury; evaluation may include X-rays, followed by support and rehabilitation as appropriate. Someone with a suspected dislocation should keep the knee supported and seek care rather than attempt to move the kneecap back themselves.
