Not only does this produce CO₂ and release toxic particles into the air, but carbon black is also considered a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). And studies suggest that prolonged exposure to carbon black particles in the air can impact respiratory health. But there’s now a much better solution. US-based Living Ink has found a way to create this deep black colour from algae! First the algae grows, they then collects its natural pigments, and they heat-treat them to create the black colouring. The result is a non-toxic alternative, without the environmental or health risks. And big brands are already using it! If more people knew about this, we’d see it in way more products and it'd help push us away from harmful fossil fuels.
