@makelithappen: Replying to @JB Paradox almost no one has a specific way of talking yet EVERYONE has a specific way of talking #dialogue #writingtips #writingcommunity #writersoftiktok #writertok
That's such a wild comment. If you listen, you'll often hear both cadence and word choice differences. It does take really paying attention, though.

The comment is silly. Impressionists don’t just make their voices sound like the person they are imitating, they use their cadence and mannerisms. People have speaking patterns. That person just isn’t observant.

The best advice I received about dialogue is that dialogue should enhance the plot not advance the plot.

I taught a university course on translation (languages, dialects, etc.) each of us has an idiolects, a unique way of speaking, not merely an accent, but style, syntax, vocabulary, etc.

I always think of what I read in An Artist is His Own Fault when I think of writing dialogue. Everyone speaks differently, not just accents but where they use certain words, what words they might use, how they might pronounce those words. Whether they approach a topic directly or sideways. Like where I live in NY is very different from where I was raised in CA, but sometimes I get clocked as Southern which my dad was from Oklahoma and my mom’s family from Arkansas. The accent and way I sort my words tells people who hear it my family history. And even now I hear my kids picking up the particular emphasis on certain words and how direct they speak on certain topics that is specific to where we live. My kids will have that same history in their own dialogue. It’s incredibly interesting

read it out loud and your mind will fix it thru your narration. that means it needs polishing. then have software or a friend read it back. you'll hear the subtly that reads as odd.
also, take critical feedback. it's a hard truth you'll love later

Word choices in dialogue reflects the time, place, era, and culture of the characters. For example, the dialogue in Hills Like White Elephants is not the same as the character dialogue in a Harry Potter book
