it pronounced exactly like the city in Egypt it was named after. it sounds incorrect now bc of the southern accent's inability to enunciate compounded over generations.

I hate when small towns are named after something that already exists with an agreed upon pronunciation and then they get mad at you when you don’t pronounce it the stupid ass way they do. “It’s ‘Pee-roo” like, dude, no it’s not

went to school in Carbondale. used to go to a guys farm down there to shoot guns and ride four wheelers. but man whatever word is worse than decrepit doesn't describe how bad the actual town is i saw.

I’d guess people who still live there are small-time residential people and landowners. People who can’t afford to leave, are just happy to own something, and can commute somewhere to work and receive medical care. Also convenience store type infrastructure

The pictures dont do it justice, its way worse. The entire county all the way up to Cape Girardeau is bad. The only people left in the area are trapped and cant leave or are rich people picking up cheap land. That flood was truly terrible, the entire area was underwater for months

I had to pull over in Cairo for some reason, I think I felt lost, and I pulled over at the spot that was supposed to be there all three state lines touched. A sort of governmental spot in that it and signs and everything but it was so clearly abandoned. Plants growing in concrete, buildings border up, cracking pavement, etc etc. It was unsettling and def a ghost town
