@c5news: Two police officers were shot and wounded, but survived their injuries, when they raced to catch a man who killed two people and wounded three in the US. Footage released by the City of Minneapolis on Wednesday shows what happened when officers reached the ninth floor. The shooter, Carlton Johnson, emerged from behind a corner and drew a handgun just as officers were checking on a victim lying in the hallway. Johnson and Officer Yahye Ahmed, who was armed with a rifle, exchanged fire while Officer Joseph Michnowski ran for cover. “I took some rounds,” Michnowski said into his radio after running down the hallway, passing another person sprawled on the ground. Soon after, more shots were heard near the stairwell where Ahmed was standing. He was also hit. Yellow smoke filled the doorway, and the wounded officers retreated down the stairs, where they were later treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting had begun outside the building during an arranged child custody handoff on 2 September. Johnson shot and wounded a woman believed to be the mother of his child. The child was not hurt. Johnson then shot two building employees and took the elevator to the ninth floor, where he killed two residents before police shot and killed him. It is still unclear if Johnson targeted those residents or simply ran into them in the hallway. The building's owners had been trying to evict Johnson after he threatened his neighbours with a gun in the months leading up to the attack. At least one person had applied for a restraining order against him. Police had also investigated him in June for waving a weapon, but the county attorney's office decided not to file charges. #5news #police
