@heatherrmarshall.com: Not the old me. Not a new me. Just me, without all the shit I picked up along the way. Other people’s projections. Their opinions. Their discomfort with my standards. Their stories about who I was because the truth of who I am required them to look at themselves a little too closely. And somewhere along the way, I started carrying some of it. I questioned parts of myself that I used to know without question. Was I too much? Was I asking for too much? Was I too strong? Too sensitive? Too difficult? Too independent? To demanding? Should I soften this? Forgive that? Understand more? Expect less? Fuck. That will make you lose sight of yourself if you do it long enough. But here’s what I’ve realized: My standards were never the problem just because someone couldn’t meet them. My authenticity wasn’t wrong because it made someone uncomfortable. And I don’t need to become smaller, quieter, easier, softer or more convenient to make another person feel better about what they see when they stand beside me. I found myself again. Buried under some heartbreak. Some bullshit. Some lessons I probably could’ve done without. 😂 And a whole lot of things that were never mine to carry in the first place. But there I fucking was. And there’s something different about finding yourself after you’ve had to fight your way back to her. You protect her differently. You trust her differently. You stop handing her over just because you love someone. So yeah. I’m back. I’m more me than I’ve ever been. And fuck, it feels good to recognize myself again. 🖤
