Wouldn’t it make more sense to put the pickles on top of the onion for structural stability?

yves-carmine :
never put lettuce on the bottom, it wilts and gets greasy from the burger patty moisture. Bun, burger, bacon, cheese, pickle, onion, ketchup, mustard, tomato, lettuce, mayo, bun. Only use the freshest tomatos and lettuce and of course I agree always toast your buns.

A mayo based sauce on the bottom also helps the bun stay dry as extra moisture from the rest of the ingredients won't mix with the oils in the mayo!
