We requested an autopsy on my dad because although he died from AML, he started purging a coffee ground looking substance after death. My husband is a mortician & suggested that type of post-mortem purge usually means a gastro issue. Sure enough...undiagnosed stomach cancer.

Hi Dr Wolfe! My own curiosity question. I'm a LTC/Hospice nurse. I had a 94yo pt pass away from end stage Alzheimer's. No longer eating/drinking, responsive to tactile stimuli only. Family wanted artificial nutrition/hydration but his AD said no. When he passed away, the family was requesting an autopsy. Would the pathologist be required to perform the autopsy? Or can they refuse the request? Thank you!

If there's significant findings other than the proximate and contributing causes of death listed on the death certificate, is there generally an effort to make sure the NOK receive the report? Watching your videos made me realize we never got one after my father died (>9 years ago), despite his death being a ME case.
I've now requested it, but don't know how long it'll take to receive (assuming it's still available after all this time).

Have you done autopsies on people that were murdered? I know movies/TV depict the ME in constant discussions with detectives to help catch the killer, but is it any more than just doing the report IRL?

if you find something genetic that the family should be made aware about, how do they find out? I presume the onus isn't on them to read the report, so what is the process of telling them like?
