Reminds of Brennan talking about getting sniped when someone noted something they thought was a character trait…that one sucks when it happens sometimes

Hurts worse when you totally build the character off of how you view yourself.

We call that Bleed. It happens, it sucks, it is worth taking actual steps to manage. Like pausing game to tall OOC and be reminded the others are your friends who care about you.

I do ask others to give me a heads up either at the start of the session or if they think they will say something mean to my pc. Just helps remind me it’s not targeted at me. Did receive feedback from two players that said having to give the warning breaks their immersion.

A DM yelled at my character while in character and I'd only met him twice. It was sudden and took me off guard because he raised his voice and I don't like to be yelled at. I almost cried and had to try really hard to hold it back. He didn't know this, but I grew up in an abusive home and I cry when anyone yells at me because I associate it with being physically harmed.

character bleed is a real thing and it's a real reason to build in breaks and safety features for your games. it's not stupid to get hit personally by a character you pour a lot of your thoughts and ideas and thus just... yourself into. the problem with playing a hero is sometimes you have to play the part were the hero has some really inconvenient realizations about themselves

A few years back I was playing a character who was a softie with self worth issues and the other PCs in the party liked picking on him for being chubby. I told the DM I was uncomfortable with the bullying and he said "learn to separate yourself from your character". I used to be a softie with self-worth issues who was bullied for being chubby. I left that table and that friendship.

In a game I'm in, we touch base after any in character argument to make sure everyone is doing okay. We've had some juicy drama because of this cause we can let off some heavy heat without causing issues

I found it really does help to have a voice for your character that is markedly different from your own. Arguments don’t hit closer to home when it’s clearly, audibly not your friend yelling at you but a dwarf with a super thick Scottish accent calling you a limp-worsted wazzock.

look, I once had to send my character to therapy. our emotions were getting too entwined. I talked to the dm, we created a new, different character, had the old one run away, and when I felt like I'd resolved issues, we brought her back. it was really great for everyone

I had something like this happen to me a few times. Every time I had to stop playing the character and reflect.
Unfortunately, I don't think I've grown much from those events, but it's taught me a lesson about making characters using traits from yourself.
I think it's better to distance yourself from your character rather than imbue them with your own personality, lest you have the irksome qualities of yourself called out.
It's helped me grow, but DND isn't therapy time and it's not fair to put that on my friends and sour the game session.
The positive aspects should really only be ingrained, interests and jokes. A more "realistic" character should probably be left for the books, not the table.

scene drops are not outside the realm of any kind of roleplay. I had one really bad because another character started scolding my character(reasonably) but what they were saying was similar enough to a real experience that I broke down and needed to take a break and talk it out above table.
if you see something say something, MAKE them take a break and talk about it

the first comment was directed towards the character, but saying yea would be pretty stupid to take it personally was directed at the player and that would have to be addressed and really make me question how in character that first comment was.

remember folks: bleed is real and can happen to anybody. if you find yourself taking what has been said to your character personally there is no shame in asking for a break while the other player reminds you you're someone they value enough to play DnD regularly with.

“Infinite Plotlines” :
In a moment like this, we all need honesty. 1.) it’s a harsh thing to say in-game. 2.) OOC we need to say how we feel and take a break to say it. 3.) NO ONE should diminish that situation to “soften it.” We should never damage friendships by being blind to a situation.
