STOP RUINING YOUR PROJECTS! Save this guide. This is furniture building 101 Ep. 3. Let’s be honest, finishing is the scariest part of the entire build. You spend weeks building something, and you can ruin it in 10 minutes with the wrong top coat. I used to hate this step, but after trying almost every product on the shelf, here are the 3 I find easiest to use: 1️⃣ WATER BASED POLYURETHANE (The Tank 🛡️) * Best For: Tables, high traffic areas, and beginners. * Why: Unlike Oil Based Poly (which smells bad and turns your wood yellow/orange), Water Based stays crystal clear, dries fast, and cleans up with soap and water. * How to Apply: Use a synthetic brush. Apply 3 coats. * ⚠️ PRO TIP: STIR, never shake the can. Shaking adds bubbles. Apply it with the grain, then lightly “back brush” one time to smooth it out. Sand with 320-grit between coats. 2️⃣ FURNITURE WAX (The Softie ) * Best For: Dressers, bookshelves, and low-traffic pieces. * Why: It gives a beautiful, hand rubbed, natural feel. It’s impossible to mess up. * How to Apply: Put an old sock on your hand or use a wax brush. Buff the wax on in circles. Wait 15 minutes. Buff it off. Done. * ⚠️ WARNING: This offers almost ZERO water protection. Do not use this on a coffee table or dining table! 3️⃣ HARD WAX OIL (The Flex) * Best For: Making the grain POP and luxury furniture. * Why: It’s a stain and finish in one. It’s expensive ($$), but it’s incredibly easy to apply and easy to repair if you get a scratch later. * How to Apply: Mix Part A + Part B. Flood the surface. Spread it out. Wait 10 mins. Wipe it ALL off until bone dry. THE VERDICT ⚖️ If it’s your first project and you want durability on a budget? Stick to the Water Based Poly. 👇 HELP ME OUT FOR EPISODE 4: Should we cover how to cut wood accurately or wha wood to use for what project? Let me know in the comments! #woodworking #diyfurniture #woodfinish #furniturebuilding101 #maker diy woodworkingtips polyurethane
