🌿The Green Man: Part 1 🌿 There is SO much to say about this well known folklore deity, so I decided to make 2 videos! This one is all about the history and meaning of the Green Man. Folklore and Mythology coming in part 2! ✨🌿 The Green Man is a figure repeated in many folklore tales, modern pagan art and ceremonies. It is a figure which can be found not only in Britain and Ireland, but all over Europe. Carvings can be found in early medieval churches, and could well have been carved by medieval masons who wanted to keep some of the old ways alive. It is probably very likely that British and Irish medieval tales depicting the Green Man came from earlier Celtic sources, as the Celtic people revered nature and the natural world above all, and even their well-known god Cernnunos was portrayed as a wild god of forests and trees. The Green Man can be seen to represent the regenerative force of the natural world, and is known by many names such as Jack in the Green and Lord of the Greenwood. The Green Man was given a name in 1939 by Lady Raglan, and once this occurred many folklore enthusiasts began searching for more examples in churches and cathedrals. It took a while for the Green Man fascination to become popular, but what really accelerated it was late 20th Century books which showed numerous depictions of this deity and examinations of its origin and symbolism. By the late 1990's the Green Man was well embedded in folklore, mythology, the neo-pagan movement and what can be known as the pagan revival. In the middle of the 20th Century it was obvious that there was a shift in mindset and many were reviving pagan traditions, cultures and practices. Organisations, groups and movements such as The Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids', the folk/Morris dancing revival, modern pagans and the Wicca movement all readily adopted the Green Man as a symbol for nature and ancient mythology. Since then the Green Man can be found mentioned in many books, essays, art, festivals, films, mythology and much more. . . . #thegreenman #jackinthegreen #devinefeminine #femaleenergy #celticpaganism #paganism #celticmythology #celticfolklore #cernnunos #forestgods
