@drdrewprovan: At long last a decent iron deficiency guideline from the American Society of Hematology. They recommend higher ferritin levels as the lower limit. The document is free so grab a copy. #haematology #irondeficiency #ferritin #anaemia #fyp

What were the guidelines in the states before if you don’t mind me asking? These parameters have been the case for us in Australia at least since I was in medical school over a decade ago and clinically I definitely see the benefit of supplementation or infusions at the higher thresholds for the relevant groups and can’t even imagine telling someone with a ferritin below 30 that it is normal or not likely to cause symptoms 😳 (I’m a General Practitioner but you guys might call that a Primary Care Physician or Family Medicine Doctor).

Same as D3, it took until this year for them to admit that 1000 units a day was stupid and we need 10,000. Better late than never I guess.

It’s hilarious because my hematologist doctor just the other day tried to tell me 22 was OK when the year before it was 51 and I have no way to replenish it because I can’t eat red meat and I can’t take iron supplements. 22 Just because I’m the old guide line was above 20 doesn’t mean it’s OK. I’m happy that the guideline has changed that marker but Still irritated with the hematologist because his first question was how heavy my periods were that I don’t have and he would see if he looked at my chart since I have IUD and was gonna tell me, I was good to go on my way and to just take supplements and that I didn’t need infusions again. Which was also in my chart that I can’t take iron supplements

This is brilliant news! I see so many people in our clinic with ferritin on the lower side and they have not been treated and are due surgery!

I don’t absorb iron, no idea why. Ferritin is now 12, after it being 50 in January off the back of a monofer infusion whilst preg last year (it was 8 before). GP has put me on tabs for a month to “prove” to the clinic I need another infusion. I feel absolutely drained, can’t function as a parent or a nurse. By 3pm I just stare and forget what I’m doing

Im so confused, I live in Libya and all the medical labs here use >75 as the normal range for ferritin. Ive never heard of 15 as a normal. Infact most doctors use inj for patients with ferritin less than 30.

I am down at 11 ferritin yet again, and I’ve had to fight for 2 months to get an infusion, last time it dropped to 4 before they gave me one - it’s such a waste of time leaving people to wait when it’s clearly going to take forever to get higher

IBD with ferritin of 17, HB around 130. Very symptomatic. Gastroenterologist said “those value are normal”, unfortunately “IBD makes people feel this way”. 🤡

My daughter's ferritin levels are 5! She can't have the iron infusion (high risk of anaphylaxis) so she's struggling with tablets...and has chronic constipation so she's constantly in pain from it (takes Laxit 10 g with macrogol). Hope they'll invent a new treatment that works for this situation, too!
