@drrhonaeskander: I really appreciate her speaking so openly about her own experience with her teeth. Conversations like this can help so many people feel less alone. 🤍 Genetics can play a role in our dental health, but it’s only one piece of a much bigger picture. Things like enamel, saliva, diet, acid exposure, oral hygiene, medications and individual circumstances can all influence what happens to our teeth over time. And where there has been repeated exposure to stomach acid, that can also contribute to significant tooth erosion. Every person and every smile is different, so this isn’t about saying anyone’s experience is right or wrong. I just wanted to add the dental perspective alongside someone sharing her lived experience so openly. 🦷 #DentalHealth #DentistExplains #ToothErosion #OralHealth #DentalEducation

I feel like it’s very important to educate patients that genetics plays only a very minor role in dental diseases. Psychologically, if patients believe it is genetic, they will think there’s nothing that can be done and won’t be motivated to make the necessary changes. However if you impress upon them the role of sugar and plaque (and smoking and poorly controlled diabetes when to comes to perio), and explain all of these factors play a far bigger role than genetics, only then will they be susceptible to listening to how to take better care of their teeth
