@docamen: My unpopular opinion about sending kids away to college… 18 is legally an adult. But the brain doesn’t magically become fully mature on your 18th birthday. The frontal lobes involved in judgment, planning, and impulse control continue developing into young adulthood. That’s why I tell parents: your job isn’t over at 18. Guidance, boundaries, and connection still matter. Would you send your 18-year-old away to college? #brainhealth #MentalHealth #parenting

Absolutely :
Community college is so underrated, especially in California. You can save money, live at home, and still transfer to a UC.

I’ve always wondered why they decided 18 should be considered an adult.

Disagree. Going away for college is not merely about academics, but about learning independence, decision-making.

As a hispanic mom, I would never send my child away from me to go to college...I can teach her to be a responsible and independent human at home as my parents taught me when turning into a young adult when attending a local college and living with them..It might be a cultural thing, if she wants to take a master degree or an specialization in a foreign country, that's different..by that point she would be mature enough, same as I did when I took a Project Management program in Spain at 29 years old..Best time of my life..

disagree 100 percent....the helicopter parenting has to stop at some point.... they need to learn how to live independently. it's your job as a parent to teach them how to make smart choices... not to choose for them.

There’s no reason why you can’t go to college close to home if you live in a decent size city you have options and there’s always a cheaper community college. Not everyone has to go away to have the experience.

So glad to see this. I always felt like such an outcast. Everyone is sending their kids off and mine wants to stay home until she figures things out. She’s going to college local and I’m ok with that. She’s still maturing. Evolving. She doesn’t need to be hundreds of miles away to do that. She’ll have plenty of time to be independent. I didn’t go away as a teen. I turned out alright. 😁

I went away to college and learned so much about myself, families, cultures and more. it taught me to appreciate my family bc every family is wayyy different than mine and value systems too.

I'll be sending my kids to college. Away. To gain independence and be challenged in a way that will help them for life. I did it. They can do it.

Depends on the child. Some are ready to be independent, some need a little longer before they’re safe to be on their own.

Unfortunately, you can control your kids forever and you just raise them right and hope they make the right decisions. If you find out they’re not doing the right thing then you stop paying for their college and pulled them out, but you can’t expect them to fail before you even gave them a chance. Who’s to say they’re not gonna be doing this anyway at community college
