A few weeks ago, I floated the idea of creating a local gathering for people living with HIV and HIV-affirming allies. Enough people expressed interest that I decided to move forward—and it is now officially happening. Sunday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. The Center Project in Columbia, Missouri This will be a casual, low-pressure evening with refreshments, games, conversation, laughter, and opportunities to meet new people. You can share your story if that would help you feel less alone, but sharing is never required. HIV can be acknowledged openly without becoming the only subject of the evening—or the entirety of anyone’s identity. The gathering is open to people who are newly diagnosed, long-term survivors, and HIV-affirming allies. It will be LGBTQ+ affirming, and people of every identity are welcome. Privacy will be taken seriously. Nobody will be expected to disclose their HIV status, explain how they acquired HIV, educate anyone, or participate in a structured discussion. There will be no photography, recording, or sharing of another person’s attendance or identifying information without their explicit permission. This is a social gathering rather than a therapy group or formal support group. The goal is simply to create a place where people can connect, build friendships, and feel less alone. If you are interested in attending—or have questions—please send me a private message. You do not need to identify yourself publicly in the comments. It would help me estimate attendance and refreshments, but you are also welcome to simply show up. I hope this can become the beginning of something meaningful for people living with HIV in Columbia and throughout Mid-Missouri.
