@arisofficehours: There’s way more to grad school than whatever your classes require. The learning curve is steep, but it doesn’t mean you can’t get informed. #HigherEd #GradSchool #PhD #LearnOnTikTokContest

I wish there was a “Hey I grew up poor, what did I miss” course that would help me navigate the basics of middle class culture.

There is more politics in the hidden curriculum than in national politics.

I chose to work as a research assistant before pursuing grad school, since I didn't feel prepared yet. I was right, and it helped so much. I struggled most with knowing the right terms for things and for understanding the structure/hierarchy of academia.

absolutely there was so much gatekeeping it was annoying, they all have a sink or swim mentality they don't care if u succeed or not which is weird bc why wouldn't u want everyone to graduate? That reflects poorly on the school

this may be a dumb question but how does one improve their question making for their grad professors & papers?

Literally had someone say I almost didn’t get into a special program because I had ONE grammar error as a medical student.

Yep. This is all assumed that you already know or should learn from your cohort. I think you should also include publishing and actually getting started in graduate school before you get out on the job market.

I'm incredibly lucky I managed to get an internship in undergrad with a mentor who helped me start to learn about this hidden curriculum. I truly did not understand academia and how grad school worked. Even through my masters I was barely beginning to understand what I was missing. I'm starting my PhD this month, and this is the curriculum I think I stress more about than my actual classes 😅

When I did my master’s, I had no idea there was a hidden curriculum. I didn’t know any of this stuff. By the end, I could tell that there was something I had very clearly missed, but I didn’t know what it was. I just thought academia wasn’t for me. So I left. Eight years later, I came back. And I had learned a lot in the meantime. Now, doing my PhD, I know most of the hidden curriculum, and I know to look for signs of what I don’t know. But I keep thinking about where I could be now if I had just known it the first time around

I think this is prevalent with students like myself who had a huge time gap in attending school. I started 20 years ago, and I just graduated this past spring. I had to teach myself a lot.

I had an amazing PhD supervisor who taught me all of this 💞.. even to the extent of when to publish a paper... when to go about to conferences etc.

A ton of the professors in my psych classes just volunteered this info to us. They talked about how they got where they are in their specific fields when they saw students who were excited about learning and pursuing the info :) I’ve also attended the South Eastern Psychological Association’s annual conference twice, and many psychologists there were the same way, especially when they recognized enthusiasm for the material.

Very true. Some of the students were so far ahead. They were reading and figuring out the publications. Really on a Ph.D track even if just getting a masters

Not long ago I had a grad interview that I swore I did well in but it came back negative. I still don't know exactly what I did wrong because there was no feedback, so it remains unseen in the hidden curriculum.
