And if you wanna really tie it in, The Irishman is a well made deconstruction on the entire genre as it highlights exactly why all of it was so violent and pointless. Such an underrated movie these days.

Godfather is set in the 40s and 50s, when the mob did have a code. Goodfellas is set in the 70s, when certain figures threw the code out of the window. But the code lived for many years and was what held the mob together until the 70s.

It helps that goodfellas is a true story based on a book that details the life of Henry hill and his time in the Mafia. There’s even a documentary about his life during and AFTER his life in the mob

I love how good fellas show you how things are really are. I think when hinry was a teen and hot arrested then deniro character told him he did good by not snitching that set up the whole movie for me

the godfather is definitely what they were. Were there mixtures of hostility, and violence. Undoubtedly. But the whole mafia lifestyle is a sophisticated rule following life

that bit about them not following their own code reminded me of both European knights and the tenets of chivalry, and also samurai with their Bushido. both were quite famous at breaking their group's "codes" very frequently lol
