What is a Heterogeneous Catalyst? Transition metals make good catalysts since they form multiple oxidation numbers, and their partially filled d-orbitals can form relative weak bonds with reactants. Hetereogeneous catalysts are in a different phase to the other reactants, usually a solid surface with gas or liquid reactants. The reaction happens over three steps: 1. Adsorption - reactants are adsorbed onto (stick to) the surface of the catalyst 2. Reaction - the bonds of the reactants are sufficiently weakened such that they can react easily 3.
