Intercropping can be a smart way of making the land productive while waiting for cocoa to mature and start giving returns. Banana is particularly useful when cocoa is still young because it can provide temporary shade and help protect the young cocoa from excessive sunlight. Cassava, on the other hand, gives the farmer an additional food or income crop from the space between the cocoa rows. However, intercropping must be properly managed. Cocoa is the permanent and main crop, so banana and cassava should not be allowed to overcrowd the garden or compete heavily with the cocoa for nutrients, water and sunlight. Maintain good spacing, control excessive banana suckers, keep weeds under control and leave enough space around each cocoa tree. The goal is simple: protect and establish the young cocoa while making productive use of the available space.
