I discovered an Edo-period ukiyo-e print, drawn in 1855, that depicts a running style remarkably similar to that robot’s. This winning robot runs by placing its feet directly beneath or behind its center of gravity, while extending its arms forward to actively lean its body forward as it moves. What makes this possible is its astonishing leg speed—400 steps per minute. Even human 100-meter medalists run at around 300 steps per minute. By extending its arms forward, the robot shifts its center of gravity as far forward as possible, almost to the point of falling. Its incredible leg speed allows it to run without falling. And the truth is, a hint of this running style was already hidden in an Edo-period ukiyo-e print. Apparently, this robot’s running style was optimized using AI.
