The "Rule of Nines" (also known as the Wallace Rule of Nines) has very infamous origins and history. Originally, the rule was born out of experience in the field hospitals of the WW2. While WW1 introduced massive projectile and concussion / explosive wounds, the WW2 added another macabre dimension to the burden of medical staff - massive number of severely burned wounded at once. The entire paradigm of triage, as it was established for projectile or explosive wounds, fails with patients with burns. Success of first line medical treatment depended on data that no-one could calculate consistently, repeatedly and quickly enough in order to assess whom to treat first and whose wounds is pointless to treat (yes, wartime field triage means giving up when you recognise that time that must be invested in treating alive but so extensively wounded who'll die no matter what will cost you more lines than to simply let go of that one life while making their last moments as painless as possible). Unlike with projectile or concussive wounds where point of impact is your starting point for treatment, with burns victims approach depends on skin surface area under the burns. The calculated Total Body Surface Area (TBSA) percentage under mid to severe burns (2nd and 3rd degree burns) acts as the foundational multiplier in the another calculation (the Parkland Formula). This formula determines the total volume of Ringer Lactate IV solution (LR) needed during the first 24 hours following a severe burn injury to prevent hypovolemic shock - a condition that took more lives of burn victims than infection.
Over time, The Rule Of 9 was found useful in other, peace time medical fields: assessing widespread dermatological conditions, large-scale decontamination, forensic medicine and trauma documentation and even in early oncology for assessing radiological or chemotherapy treatments.
Hope this helps.
