It honestly makes me sad to see the hatred that still persist within parts of the Tamil diaspora towards Sinhalese people. We are not responsible for what previous generations did. We can acknowledge and learn from the past while still choosing to build a better future together. We are all Sri Lankans. Dirty politics divided our people, but we don’t have to let those divisions define us forever. She has a powerful voice and the ability to bring people together. I hope she can use that voice to bring us closer, rather than push us further apart. Have you ever been to Sri Lanka? Sinhalese and Tamils actually live much closer together there, and I believe that connection can be used to build a better future. Sometimes I feel that the hatred is even stronger within parts of the Tamil diaspora towards Sinhalese people, and I really wish we could move beyond that.

These people who were lucky enough to not have grown up in Sri Lanka during the war trying to rewrite the Sri Lankan Civil War into a story where Tamil Eelam = automatically justified and the LTTE committed no crimes is crazyyy 😭 The LTTE literally carried out suicide bombings, targeted civilians, political assassinations, forced recruitment including CHILDREN, and atrocities against Sinhala, Tamil AND Muslim civilians. Like these aren’t opinions they’re documented. They are so biased and truly have no idea what it was like because they weren't there . The government committed serious abuses too, especially towards the end of the war. Both things can be true. Calling the entire conflict a one-sided genocide while completely erasing the LTTE’s crimes and the fact that this was a 26-year armed conflict is just rewriting history. Innocent Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim people suffered and died because of BOTH sides. Like why can't they respect those innocent people that passed enough to tell the whole story, not just the version that fits their twisted narrative. Even trying to equal this to the atrocities happening in Palestine like literally how dare you ?

idk i’m sri lankan tamil and refer to myself as that specifically, and my dad was literally from jaffna so he saw the violence firsthand. i see this perspective a lot with canadian tamils who left sri lanka early on (im american), and to me it sort of feels removed from the actual geopolitics of the country. it was a genocide but i see people comparing it to the palestinian genocide, which isn’t fair or accurate imo since sinhalese people have a legit claim to sri lanka and israelis don’t. idk i don’t really have a point to this but my sinhalese friends condemn the oppression tamilians face and all my tamil friends identify as sri lankan tamils too, and i really do believe in coexistence with an acknowledgement of the harm perpetuated and why it was

We have to look at history honestly. When the British handed our sovereignty to Sinhala leaders in 1948, we truly tried to live peacefully as equals. But over the years, governments turned against us, using ethnic hatred to divide people and avoid questions about the country’s progress. They burned our treasured library in 1981. During the 1983 riots, the state helped mobs by giving them Tamil voter lists. They bombed their own citizens from land, see and air. They punished Tamil communities with economic blockades. Even today, whenever the ground is dug in Tamil areas, mass graves appear. With all of this, how are we supposed to feel like citizens of Sri Lanka ?
