He is introduced as an intelligent and seemingly charming bookstore manager who presents himself as thoughtful, romantic, and deeply interested in the people he cares about. Joe is highly observant and has an impressive ability to analyze people’s behavior, remember small details, and manipulate situations. However, beneath his polite exterior lies a deeply obsessive and controlling personality. He often convinces himself that his actions are motivated by love and protection, even when they seriously violate other people’s boundaries. Joe’s story revolves around his repeated attempts to find what he considers to be genuine love. His relationships with characters such as Beck, Love Quinn, Marienne, and others reveal different sides of his personality and repeatedly expose the contradictions between how Joe sees himself and how he actually behaves. His difficult childhood and experiences growing up help explain some of his beliefs about relationships, although they do not excuse his choices. As each relationship develops, Joe creates elaborate justifications for his actions while trying to maintain the image of an ordinary, caring man. This cycle becomes central to the series, as Joe repeatedly runs from the consequences of his past while creating new problems. What makes Joe Goldberg so memorable is the contrast between his calm, intelligent narration and the increasingly disturbing reality behind his perspective. He is able to make his thoughts sound reasonable and romantic, encouraging the audience to recognize how easily someone can distort reality to justify their own behavior. His intelligence, charisma, self-awareness, and unreliable perspective make him a particularly complex protagonist. Joe’s story ultimately explores obsession, identity, manipulation, self-justification, morality, relationships, and the danger of confusing possession with love, making him one of the most distinctive characters in modern psychological television. - @twyzou
