In a world full of screens and devices it can be hard to get older children engaged in open ended and small world play. As a mother of an 8 year old boy, I understand the struggle! My tips for engaging older kids with small world play are: 1. Allow them to create their own world like Leo is here. I gave him no direction and let him choose what he wanted to add. He’s 8 years old and loves putting scenes together 🧡 2. Create a world and add things that don’t belong (like Artic animals in a desert setting) and ask them to tell you what shouldn’t be there. This is great for any age - the older they are the harder it can be. 3. Ask them to think of a story and then create it using animals and or people figures. It can be as simple or as elaborate as they like. This is a great way to encourage storytelling and imaginative play. 4. Pick a theme and ask them to create a world for that theme. For example: Dinosaurs. It can be really specific or more open like ‘Fairy Land’ so they can add their own ideas. 5. Create a game around it. For example: set a timer and have different themes or stories written on paper that you pull out of hat and then you have to create that theme within the time.
