Atlas V: from nuclear missile to retired rocket 🚀 The story of the Atlas begins in 1957, when the SM-65 Atlas became the United States' first intercontinental ballistic missile—a Cold War nuclear weapon. Adapted for spaceflight, it evolved over decades. In 1962, an Atlas carried John Glenn into orbit, making him the first American to circle the Earth. The pinnacle of this lineage arrived in 2002 with the Atlas V. Standing up to 62 meters tall and powered by the Russian-made RD-180 engine, it completed 110 launches without a single total failure, carrying probes such as Curiosity to Mars and New Horizons to Pluto. In 2026, after a history spanning nearly 70 years, the Atlas V retired, making way for the Vulcan Centaur. #AtlasV #ULA #foguete
